Air pots?

Has any one tried growing potatoes in Air Pots; it sounds as if the air pruning effect should really increase their yield.

as long as you water them daily!..according to the site.
I'd never heard of them so had to Google....interesting, but unless someone else has tried them, it will be an experiment for you :)

If you do try let us know how you get on with them

Yes argyllie. They sell special ones for spuds on the Harrod Horticulture site. They say that when the roots get to the egg box shaped bits the air kills the growing tip so the roots branch and hence you get a bumper crop.

I am growing everything in containers on a patio (used to be pretty flowers!!) so am very space limited and yield is important. I saw these when checking out what containers were available and was intrigued.

I am going to give it a try so will let you know how it goes.

I have a spare area where I cant put a permanent bed as we would never be able to get to paint the windows again! These are a bit pricey but I could effectively create a movable raised bed which could be packed away for the winter.

Yet another bit of the garden utilised  :D

I will grow 5 pots each with a different variety chosen with the help of Argyllie's wonderful potato poll.

   :D

We're growing three varieties this year, two of those as a result of the polls. What varieties are you going to grow Clare?

I have just gone on to T&M site and many varieties have sold out.

I think that I am going for vivaldi, charlotte and mayan gold so far. I am not sure about Anya.

I am just going to pop down to the GC to see what they have. I would like  to get Desiree and ambo. I was also intrigued by 2 varieties that do not appear on the poll; Inca bella and piccolo star.

I am already growing lady christl.

What do you think? What have you decided to grow?

Thompson and Morgan have them but the postage is expensive. If the GC doesnt help I am going to take the hit of postage tho as I am eager to go ahead with this experiment.

Do you think I should bother with Anya ?

You'll be struggling to get any seed spuds from a garden centre now, let alone a choice, but no harm in trying.

Out of interest, (or not), this is my choice:

FE
Epicure
Lady Christl
Pentland Javelin

SE
Charlotte
Kestrel

MC
Ambo
Desiree
Picasso
Sarpo Mira
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Bit late for main crop potatoes now I would have thought - they have a long growing season.  Still time for first earlies I'd think.

I haven't grown Anya (Pink Fir Apple x Desiree) but have grown PFA a few times. They're good. :)

Am I OK for SE's?
The Mayan gold is an 'early maincrop' will this be OK?
The GC is no use so I am paying P&P

My Choices are

Vivaldi
charlotte
mayan gold
Anya

No PFA I am afraid
