feeding greens to chickens
« on: May 14, 2011, 08:54 »
We are looking after a neghbours 4 chickens for a week.  He said to give them greens out of the garden to supplement their usual corn diet - there are lots of them!  Are there any rules or dangers about how much to give?  Many thanks.

Mine love dandelion leaves, which is handy as I have loads  :D

But, greens are usually only given as a treat in the afternoon in our run as I want them to fill up on layers pellets in the morning.

When you say their usual corn diet, is that all it is, corn? Usually this is also an afternoon treat, as on it's own it doesn't provide all the nutrients/proteins that they need.

Have a great week.

Greens usually means, cabbage (or other brassica types), lettuce, spinach, turnip tops, radish tops etc. They like grass but its better if they feed on it themselves. Wild dandelions and chickweed are also good. Just throw them a good big handful during the day.

I have a different approach to OpiumEater - I see greens as a major part of my girls' staple diet so I will let them have as much as they want.  :)

As far as I know, everything that's non-toxic for humans is also fine for chickens.  Mine love grass (best picked themselves as Fisherman says) and any garden weeds and vegetables for human consumption.  Offer them a wide variety and they will choose what they want to eat.

As these chickens are used to eating greens, I would suggest you give them lots to pick through.  The only problem I could see would be if it was a sudden change in diet - for example if they had never eaten greens before then you threw a pile in and they went mad and ate them all at once.  Then they would probably end up with the runs and a tummy ache!  ???

???

Mine do kind of fibrous poos if they eat a lot of grass in one go.  Never thought I'd be discussing this subject in public...
