I've also read that they can paddle in shallow water (a paint tray for example) after the first few days.

Just to put everyones minds at rest as I get the impression some are worried, I work with all sorts of animals, including rescue ones. I ask for advice on here as sometimes a question pops into my head and it would be nice to have a forum full of people to chat too as well as just people at work.

I'm new to the hatching process, baby chicks and ducks but I have excellent people as back up if I need it, so please dont worry! I'm a sensible adult and am not ever going take uneccessary risks  :) I just thought it would be nice to join here and make some friends

Ha ha funnily enough it has a monkey teddy in there at the moment  he doesn't seem to like him though so I think we need to find a different teddy bear  :)

Glad to hear he can't get into the drinker but make sure he can get his head in. I understand this is so they can clean their eyes and use the water for preening.

You could try suspending a mop head in with him he may get under that to keep warm - a bit like his Mom :D
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
