white powdery thing on blackcurrant

Hi,

I have some white powdery covering on my blackcurrant leaves. The leaves look otherwise OK. I googled powdery mildew/blackcurrant and it looks nothing like that, and it just looks like it is on the leaf rather than stem.

The plot next to me has the same stuff, but on pumpkin. Those leaves seem otherwise unaffected, apart from the larger ones going brown, but thats probable due to age. Sorry but I haven't a photo yet.

Can anyone make an educated guess as to what the problem may be? I'm going to swing round to the plot later today after work, and post a photo of it.

Dunno about an "educated guess" so can I just guess instead?  Gooseberry mildew.

mould doesnt have to come in white it can be grey_ black _red  id blame the marrows and then the wind for spreading it . pick what are ripe and then allow more air to get around the bushes next year  mould only happens in damp places  air freely flowing helps reduce this dampness
still alive /............

Gooseberry mildew.

I had a look at the site quoted prior to posting, and also looked up photos of gooseberry mildew, but it doesn't look like this.. it looks like someone has taken frosting sugar to the leaves and given em a good dusting...

would gooseberry mildew be on pumpkins?

I'll post a photo later

I was rather tardy in getting the camera organized. Can anything be done to save these? Organic or not. They are in containers, always have been. Next door has loads of pumpkins and some of the leaves are like this.

Here are the photos:

vine powdery mildew, treat with supercarb when the thing is first spotted . bit late now burn all the wood and leaves asap to prevent even further spread :)

Cheers, Munty. What is supercarb? Google reports diet products... anyhow it looks like I'll have to trash them, poor things. is it transmitted in soil?

What other fruit/veg does this affect? I notice there are some resistant varieties but these are against gooseberry mildew i think ...

Chemical name is carbendazim.

Bio market it as 'Supercarb'.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

pick the fruit that is there n wash it ... trash the rest down to the ground leave stalks about 6 inches long . try getting hold of CYFLAMID its the thing for treating it .ask your bigger garden suppliers ( not corner shop types)

cheers for the tips.

These are all canes in their own pots, they havent had a season to fruit yet. i think the best bet will be to chuck 'em, and look for resistant canes.

I'm surrounded by organics growing pumpkins. Seems the pumpkins can weather the mildew but blackcurrant can't  so I'm looking for some resistant types to go for - any suggestions? I'm not too happy about applying agrifungicides in this situation - there's only 5 canes and they've only got about 5 leaves on each cane

oh well...
