Rampant Cabbage Root Fly
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:17 »
For the first time in years my entire brassica crop has been hit, went down last night and all of them wilted in that gut wenching way, pulled a couple up and they were full of maggot, looks like a mass collar making day today for the next lot which is due to go in.
Is this going to be one fo those years I wonder ???

Punk isn't dead...it's underground where it belongs. If it comes to the surface it's no longer punk...it's Green Day!

Sorry for your losses Aidy  :(

What kind of collar do you use to stop it?

they look like this

http://www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/kitchen-garden-tools/kitchengarden/fertilisers-pest-control/brassica-collars/classid.2000011993/

but you can make your own out of old lino, roofing felt or even cardboard  :)

anything lying around that is thick enough to stay put and stop the fly laying near the base of the plant, old thick plastic, cardboard, carpet underlay etc.

I’ve had a couple of kohl rabi plants attacked in the past few days. They were coming on nicely too! >:( I spent a few minutes squishing every maggot I could find then took the small kohls home and added them to a salad for tea so not as bad as it could have been. :D

I've had my radish attacked by the same maggot. I hope it won't search for my parsnips and onions which are in the same bed. Just ordered some Grow Your Own from Nemersys to kill them off. x

cabbage root fly warning
My cabbages are going down with cabbage root fly, so be warned.
I have lost nearly a row and they are starting on the next row, which is kale.
I don't know if there is anything that can be done once they have been attacked.
I put collars around the stems when I took them up to the lottie, but that has not worked.

your parsnips and onions are safe from the cabbage root fly, but the carrot fly and the onion fly and the alium leaf miner will probably eat them.. :(
