Alignment of raised beds
« on: May 11, 2011, 12:37 »
Anyone have any views on whether to align them N-S or E-W. I would have thought E-W, but I read in The Vegetable Expert by Dr D G Hessayon that they should go N-S, and as my plot is N-S that would be much better for me.

Thanks for any advice.

If you have your rows N-S then they get the sun on both sides, so it depends how you intend to sow/grow in the beds which way they have to go.

At the end of the day I really don't think it makes much difference though  ::)

Most people align their beds with their plots, and then angle their rows for the sun- if they want to!

I have had to fit raised beds in where I can as my garden is 'usually designed'

Just so long as you dont have a mirror at the end of the bed as that meant to be bad Feng Shui.... :tongue2:
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

All mine are as near to N/S as possible, but it doesn't make a lot of difference if you can't do that.  As plant spacings are equal all round I don't have wider rows to take into consideration.
Cheese makes everything better.

Great, N-S it is then, thanks.

Blimey it's all very involved this allotment business. My head is spinning!

I have the majority of my raised beds N-S, but one I put S-N and there dosent seem no difference in the stuff I grow in it.  ;) ;)
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

All that's really important is that you try to place taller veg at the north end of your beds, and shorter ones at the south ends. This way shorter ones aren't shaded by taller ones, and all will do well. So if you have 2 rows of beds, end to end, all tall veg go in the upper bed, all shorter ones in the lower south bed.

If you made your beds into an E formation you can have some both ways and have a little extra growing space.

Robert
Make all the beds the same size, then if you make cloches or net covers they can be moved from bed to bed as needed.

Good idea, will bear that in mind.  I really wish I'd done this a few months ago, very frustrating wasting all this good weather whilst I get things into order.  Got a few things on the go in the garden / on windowsills but it will be good to get things up and running on a slightly more useful scale.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Take your time setting up the plot in a way the works and it will pay in the years to come.
