Broody Hen in Main Coop.
« on: May 03, 2011, 17:00 »
Hi, this is my first post - please be nice lol.

I've 3 orpingtons, in their first year of laying, one has been broody since friday that I know off, could be longer as I've been at work and was at home cos of the bank hol.

I was wondering if any of you have reared chicks, by keeping mum in the main coop without moving her? If so what were your experiences, and any tips would be most welcome :)

Just a quick post, as about to leave work, but I'll come and introduce myself properly soon.

Thanks Tasha

they should always be moved to their own accommodation - this could be a single storey rabbit hutch or ark - just somewhere where they will be out of draughts and out of predators way  :).
Welcome by the way - why not nip over to our welcome section and introduce yourself to everybody  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull, I've read a few different bits and pieces, saying they can be left etc, but then the next says they need to be moved. their current coop, is all draught free, dry and secure etc, and she seems quite happy in there. Going to keep a look out for a cheap hutch/coop I guess.

I left my broody hen in with her fertile eggs until they hatched and then moved them immediately to their own private accommodations.  Worked a treat!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
