Was full of smugness when I read this thread as my Parsnips carrots and beetroot had got to about 2 inches high on Friday and was chuffed to hell.

Then I came back from fishing in early evening Sunday to find my blooming chickens enjoying a dust bath in veg plot after the wind had blew their gate open

I have the same trouble but with foxes not chickens.  :(

I watched a pheasant stroll carefully between the lengths of two 30' rows of seedlings yesterday...

He didn't touch either row either!

Coming back with its mates for lunch later?

The speed that the weed's grow can be a problem with a late sowing; try sowing some radish in the same row, they will come up quite rapidly and at least let you see where you can hoe. And you can eat the radish.  This will also work with earlier sowings.

They always seem to be around Learner, and scare the living daylights out of us when they wander by squawk for no apparent reason...

They do kick some stuff around, but are so thick, they just wander off in a daze if you chase them!

I will check the rows again this afternoon just to make sure though, they might be reading this... ;0)
