hens laying overnight?
« on: April 29, 2011, 06:55 »
my 7 month old hens have been laying for the last month. but 2 of them are laying soft shelled eggs overnight while they are roosting as well as normal eggs in the morning.
will this stop in time as they get used to laying?

The fact they are being laid in the night suggests they are being passed too quickly to properly have a shell deposited.  Could also point to a calcium problem.  What is your feeding regime because this might well be at fault.  Whose layer pellets do you use and do you feed any treats or other scratch feeds in the afternoon?  Do you supplement with anything and what?

If nutrition is ok this shouldn't happen and unless it is just a passing phase which if it is should pass quickly, then you need to put your finger on the problem.
