top 10 well grown vegs and fruits in UK
« on: April 12, 2011, 23:38 »
newbie in allotment and wondering what are the populars and eager to find out what to grow to avoid disappointment in my first year.

already planted,

vegs: potato, onion, broad bean (plants are badly damaged by ants at the moment), Jureslem artichokes, garlic, letus, ruburb

fruits: strawberrys, blackcurrent, rasberry, blackberry(thornless plant but no sign of growing yet), grapes (as well looks died)...

what are your best grown things?
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

Me too but, for the first time, mine aren't up either... they're still sitting in the packet/s!  ::)

No rush as there's still lots of time to keep on sowing carrots especially Autumn King.  ;)

Not quite sure what you mean by "best grown" but in any case I can't let sweetcorn be left off the list!

Some people seem to think they're a bit difficult but as long as no undue risks are taken with frost, they're planted in blocks and well fed, they are virtually trouble free (OK, not the most productive vegetable in recent summers but one of the most yummily fantastically delicious!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sweetcorn must be in the top 5. Easy to grow, not a lot of pests and great to eat.

Runner beans ...an absolute must for me ;)

peas, french beans dwarf and climbing, winter squash/pumpkins, courgettes and chard.

Tomatoes are easy to grow in a greenhouse or under plastic, but not reliable outside IMO
unless we get a lovely long summer
