Chicken with balding back - pls help
« on: April 05, 2011, 20:10 »
Hi, I am new to this and wondered if anyone could help me?

I have a light sussex hen who is 18months now and she has a patch just above her tail feathers which has gone bald. I have checked her throughly for lice, ticks etc.. but she shows no signs of any of these. It's not red or sore and she is perfectly happy in herself. It just looks very unsightly and as though no one cares for her.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem, and if there is a solution?

Thanks

Jenny

Yes, but I'm not sure that's the problem it hasn't affected any of the other chickens.  ;)

she will be his favourite (I have a hen like this as well), you can buy poultry saddles to help protect their back  :)

This is a favourite area for feather pecking around their preening gland so keep your eye open for a culprit(s) and use a beak bit if you spot one.

With the bigger breeds they do do this and you can get a mating saddle this is my Orpingtons back with in the 1st months of mating. You can get the mating saddles of the net ot you can make then.

I wonder what that cockerel is whispering in her ear?
