Problem with chilli
« on: March 29, 2011, 12:17 »

Only tried once to grow chillies. Last year in the greenhouse, it only produced about half a dozen flowers & they all fell off leaving a stem which just rotted.
The plant grew to about 24"

What did I do wrong. It was planted with the tomatoes, & I was thinking that I might have over watered it.
I have one growing at the moment, it's about 6" tall & I've just transfered it to a bigger pot, 2" to 6".
I really would like this one to be successful & would appreciate any tips.
Thanks

I think you're flowers are not being pollenated. I would suggest growing more than one plant and inviting in the bees. If not, then you could try a bit of self pollenation to help them along (you could try a cotton bud for that, or a piece of wool)

What variety ?

If you treated the last one like a tomato you probably drowned the poor thing. Once established water only when it wilts. Theres a big arguments as to how often and at what strength to feed - personally I feed once a fortnight with double strength tomato feed once the flowers appear.

I agree with the two key points from the other posts.

Water much less than you would with toms, even to the point of waiting for them to start to wilt.

Have a couple of each type and try to get a bit of a breeze or insects to help pollination. Those I had on my windowsill last year kept dropping their flowers while those I had in a semi open cold frame seemed to get pollinated ok.

Thanks, so.........

1   Get it a mate
2   Keep it off the booze
3   Feed it regularly
4   Make like the bees

I think I can just about manage that  :)

If no bees can get in the greenhouse stand them outside on hot, not too windy days, I do the same with the aubs as well  :)

A very soft bristled paint brush, brushed in the middle of the flowers will sort your problem out.  Chillies don't keep their flowers very long if they're not pollinated, so be sure to do this as soon as you see new flowers.

Chillies can be a little temperamental as well, they don't need as much water as tomatoes, so don't be tempted to include them every time you do the rounds with the hosepipe/can.  I've always had the best chillies from plants that I've nearly forgotten about, and watered once or twice a fortnight.

One last tip is to nip the plant regularly.  Leggy generally make poor chillies in my experience, try to encourage bushiness, and you'll get a happier plant.  If it is leggy already, stake it to support the branches so they don't get harmed when the plant wilts between watering.

Some advice I read once, was that you should never water chillis after 4.30pm, as they don't like to spend the night with wet feet!

I know the feeling sometimes...
