Composting advice
« on: March 28, 2011, 20:12 »
Having made my wooden compost bin, at last, I'm now wondering if I can get away with not having to take anything to the local dump, as I regularly had to do in the past.

I know about not composting bindweed, dandelion, dock, and the one with those clusters of bulbs around a central root that looks like a see-through parsnip (what is that called anyway - some sort of clover?).

So, herb robert, yes/no?

Groundsel?

Tufts of grass?

Couch grass?

Those other little weeds that seem to be all over the place that stick closely to the ground?

Finally, is there anything you can do to the real nasty ones to avoid taking them to the dump? Anything I could do to the likes of dandelion/dock to let me eventually put it on the heap (leave it to dry out - soak it in water, bash it with a hammer?)

Any advice?

Annual weeds that have not yet set seed can go in.

I wouldn't compost couch grass.

Alternative things to do with the nasties includes burning them (if permitted and no nuisance caused by the smoke), drying them out (if decent weather) or drowning for a looooong time till they stink to high heaven.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
