Parsnips in 'newspaper' pots

This year I sowed parsnips in in newspaper rolls instead of loo rolls!

But when I planted them out I seen red bits on top of the growing medium :blink:

Anybody got any ideas why?

could be mould fruiting bodies? what sort of growing medium are you using?

Was it "Socialist Worker?"

Newspaper pots tend to grow a bit of fungus on the outside (worse with toilet roll tubes because the glue apparently provides extra nutrients!) but it's normally white, and usually harmless.

(In other words; I dunno!)
