Plum Trees - Mirabelle
« on: March 20, 2011, 17:56 »
Hello folks, today on my allotment a fellow grower asked me if I want some plum tree saplings and if so would I remove them today or they would go either on a fire or to some other plot holder with an interest. I jumped at the chance and said very definitely, yes!! However, when I got to her plot the trees were a little bit more than saplings,I'm sure they are at least three years old and in good nick. I managed to dig up three of these trees, but the ground was so poor and dry it fell off the roots leaving me with a bare rooted trio of plum trees. They are called 'Mirabelle',but my worry is will they handle me moving them? I put them in a vat of water for a good hour then planted them and watered each of them again with two gallons of water each. The main problem is that the leaf buds have already started to open and I wonder if this is going to put the trees under a lot of stress. Any thoughts please? Thanks for you time

It may disrupt them this year but if you keep them very very well watered they should be OK eventually.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

when is it safe to cut back plum trees? I know that silverleaf can be devastating to certain fruit trees, but recent additions to my plot (three mirabelle plums), are a bit shabby and need a good pruning to get them in shape. Thanks for your time  :)
