Garlic
« on: March 20, 2011, 17:30 »
I have had some garlic in the lottie since the back end of last year and it's coming along fine but I just wondered if I should give them a bit of a boost by applying some general fertilizer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
He's my best buddy, my dog called Woody.
If it works, organic. If it don't, well.........??

Was told that they like bonemeal  so if you have any try some. Otherwise a general fertilizer cannot do them a great deal of harm.  :tongue2:

I would tend to leave them to it, as they have been in the ground so long.

I pulled one of mine that has been in the ground since autumn and it was tiny..no bigger than a spring onion-is this normal?

Yes, they won't be ready until around June.

Now's the time they start to put on weight as the weather warms up. Winter was just getting them ready for the sprint.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It depends on the variety.  If it's an autumn sown variety, it needs to be in the ground over the winter in order to split into cloves.  But you can get spring-sown varieties if you prefer to sow at that time of year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think that is usually applied to greens, cabbages family, rather than the onion family.

Onions need some nitrogen in the Spring to get them going and then a high potash feed feed later on to help them ripen.

Nitrogen can either be part of a base soil dressing such as Gromore or applied as a top dressing as sulphate of ammonia, ammoniun nitrate, chicken pellets etc.

High potash fertilisers such as those used for tomatoes, i.e. tomatorite are OK for later.
