There's still hope. I sowed mine under glass three weeks ago and they are just beginning to show!

They can't grow until conditions are right, the soil may need to warm up a bit more first. ....yes Googled.............. onions need at least 10'C.
I think you sowed too early, so you may have to start again :(

I tried the same variety in autumn last year and didn't have any luck  :(

Just a thought but some seeds do take a while to germinate and it has still been quite cold...  Keep an eye out - they may surprise you yet.

They do 2 different varieties of White Lisbon, a summer and winter.  Was it the winter on that you tried in the Autumn?  I bought some last year, but did not get round to putting any in.  Was going to try this year.

We sowed the same in our polytunnel around last October and they only started showing a few weeks ago. ::)

Yes, it was the winter variety.  I did get seedlings, but they never fully developed.  It was my first try at growing anything over winter, so I put it down to my inexperience.  I planted Pak Choi at the same time and had loads of that, just no spring onions   ???

I think this is perfectly normal - by sowing them in autumn, they have already started to grow and then they go dormant over winter and start to bulk up in spring when it gets warmer.  That way you crop them earlier than spring sown seeds.

I start mine off in pots of compost.
3" pot filled with multipurpose compost sow a good sprinkling of seeds (30 or so) then water and wait until they start to germinate.
Use a bulb planter and plant the whole thing out in the plot, do this every couple of weeks and you will have a constant supply through the main growing season, and if you you have a greenhouse you'll get them most the year round.

Thanks, Stompy.  What a great idea.  I'll try it tomorrow.
