Re grassing coop
« on: March 18, 2011, 13:56 »
Hi now i have my first chick, i need to get my coop ready again, am thinking of putting some grass seed in the run so they have something to peck at, i`ve got a good while before any chickens going in the run so it should give it time to grow, is that a good idea or just a waste of time, any other ideas?

I think it very much depends on how many birds you intend to keep and what size the area of the run is. Chckens love grass and will mow your newly established turf or seed to oblivion if it is not big enough. My hens are till keeping the grass very trim in their field even though it has started growing. We have mown our lawn twice already. So think carefully about grasing your run area. If you really want them to have regualr grass I would suggest growing it in seed trays and when it's nicely established let them at a tray at a time. They will love it but trash it to. :)
