Looks like frost damage to me.  Montanas grow like weeds so I wouldn't worry about it but you might want to chuck some fleece over your plant if we get another heavy frost

NO! don't do this with a montana clematis or you will get no flowers ......montana varieties flower on old wood and should be pruned only after flowering.
