Hi really loving reading all the q&a. my 2nd question is i would like to start something from seed my only problem is it would have to be on window sil at minute as not got my g'house yet. what would be good to start now and move to my lottie later? regards Bailz

Seed potatoes don't get started off in compost, you just put them in egg boxes or other low boxes (to keep them upright) to start chitting.  This means starting off the sprouting process.  Good light and relatively cool (but frost-free) conditions are needed.

Then plant them out anytime from a couple of weeks from now.

Reading your post i would presume this allotment is new to you and the best thing for a new lotty is potatoes!!

Still too early for most other veg unless you intend to grow them indoors (eg chillies); not having a greenhouse or cold frame limits your options but in another month or so you will have many more.
