Personally, I wouldn't recommend a walnut tree in an allotment. The roots produce toxins that can affect plants grown nearby, some of them the kind of plants people grow on allotments. So not only might your harvest suffer, but also that of your neighbours.

Have a look at:

I've got a fig tree (Brown Turkey) in my garden that I planted about 20 years ago, it's amazing - I can't keep up with the amount of fruit it produces! It's planted in  'box' of paving slabs with 'any old soil' - it's never been actively fed, but it is pruned almost very year to keep it in order - easy to do as the wood is very soft and 'waxy' . It can be a big (huge) beast if you let it. I can't remember when it produced its first fruit, but it wasn't in the first few years, but careful nurturing might give you crops sooner. If you don't pick the figs quickly, they do attract swarms of wasps. Mine is against a wall, facing vaguely south-west.
Two plots with The Leicester Permanent Society - still learning.
