Onion sets sprouting
« on: March 04, 2011, 19:17 »
Hi

I brought some Onion sets on line and they've arrived already sprouted. I'm planting them tomorrow. Should I break the sprouted ends off or just leave them as they are? The sprouted ends are abit curly from being in the bag.

Thanks

I'd leave them be, but then again I've never grown onions from sets so perhaps wait for someone else to come along who has!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Good guess, Yorkie!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

don't break the ends off. You'll weaken the plants they will have wasted energy.
The condition they are in suggests poor storage to me. Just plant them carefully and cross your fingers. If the weather is really cold you could pop them in seed tray with soil and put them into a cool greenhouse or similar till weather is a bit warmer.

Good luck HH
Keep digging

Just to say I started planting them and then noticed they had a blue fungus on them so binned the lot. That Thomson and Morgan for you.

Brought some more from the Garden Centre.

I've planted ones with bits of mould on and they pretty much all survived and grew into OK onions...
