cockerel with a sore throat

Is it possible for a bird to have a sore throat? I was up with them this morning and when he started, his crowing was...well it sounded like he was struggling. Has anyone else had this? Cause for concern? Everything else seems normal, except for them eating the paper shreddings for their beds (which I've now changed to straw).
