Question about Globe Artichokes
« on: February 15, 2011, 17:52 »
Hiya

Hubby has just been shopping at B&Q and has come home with some Globe Artichoke roots.

Can we break then in two, like we did with our comfrey roots, or will this damage them?

Any advise on growing Gobe Artichokes would be really great as we love them but have never grown them before and didn't even realise you can buy them as roots.

Thanks in advance  :)

Herbie

(Amended to change tubers to roots).

Globe artichokes are usually sold as plants/roots

are you sure they are not Jerusalem artichokes, cos they are the ones that are sold as tubers?

You can split them when the roots get big, but would think that the suppliers have already made the roots for sale as small as they can be.
They are not as strong as comfrey, so, IMO you would need to grow them for a few years before they're big enough to split.

Hiya

Will leave them as they are then, thanks :)

The reason we wondered was that it said two in a pack, but some had one, but it was much longer than the ones with two in...

The ones with only one in, it's about 5" long and the ones with two in are about 2.5" or 3" long.

It's not a question of how big the root is, it's how many buds it has on it to grow, the ones I looked at only had 1 bud on each piece of root, regardless of the size of root.

comfrey seems to grow from any old small piece of root   but globe artichokes are not as easy as that :(
