The requests being when will be the best time to move them and how should they be treated ?  Thanks for any advice.

It's obviously not ideal to move them but if you've got to do I would do it soon while the crowns are still more or less dormant. The 'spiders' will be bigger than last year so you'll need a bigger trench/ridge to move them into... then pamper them a bit with some feed and protection...

Right. Don't be tempted to pick any shoots until after that time. The plant is still growing and needs the 'food' those shoots will provide to increase the root mass. When it's in its third year you can pick a few shoots, and after that you can crop until end of June.

Picking now won't kill the plant but it will definitely delay your main harvest by several years, so not a good trade off.

I started with crowns and the first year they grew and you let them flower and then clip them when the stem dies back about four inches from the ground.
The second year they should shoot some heads up but do not be tempted to take them all as this will finish the plant off.
From the third year on you should be okay but do not take every shoot and you should be blessed for years to come...well thats the info that was given to me and by reading the books its about right good luck.

Move them now. They will be OK out of the ground if you keep them frost free and do not let them dry out.

You will be surprised at how big the roots are. It will not hurt to shorten some of the roots if it will make lifting / planting easier.

Three years (but preferably four) I think.

year 1 grow from seed
year 2 plant out in early Spring
year 3 taking any crop will weaken the plant, so practice restraint!
year 4 light cropping
year 5 normal cropping

moving year 4 & 5 to year 3 & 4 is up to you, but not recommended
