new chicken lifting legs. Normal?
« on: February 09, 2011, 17:06 »
Hi all,
I am after some advice.  I have a new chicken - 19 or so wks - a cream legbar (Ethel).  We got her on Sunday but today I noticed that she has begun lifting her legs very high almost on to her back? (not at the same time but on and off). It is as though she is uncomfortable, but not in pain I don't think.  She is walking normally, but then she will lift her leg weirdly.  Is this normal?? She doesn't seem to have eaten much today either - crop empty so have brought her in and given her some food.  She is eating now.
Also, she doesn't sound like a hen, she almost honks.  Is she a he?  She was sold as nearly at Pol.
Is there anything I should be concerned about?
Thanks for any help

One of my hens started 'high stepping' but it was because she had never been on grass before and was used to hard surfaces. :)
I also have a hen that honks . No obvious reason for it, she has been wormed and is healthy.
Just has a funny voice as some people do. :)

Hi 8doubles,
Thanks for your response, I am relieved that it's not something awful, especially as I have completely fallen in love with her.  I appreciate your time, thanks again!!

While she's in just give hera good check out for parasites like lice or mites.

Thanks HF, had a good look and she seems fine.  Will Flubenvet them all this weekend too so all bases covered.  She was out and about today and had an empty crop when my husband brought her in and put her in front of food.  I will continue to keep an eye and monitor her.  But thanks for the advice.
