Worming, how often is too often?
« on: January 31, 2011, 19:35 »
My neighbour who is also chicken crazy, has about 50 chickens in a large garden.  They are free range and are often feeding with wild birds!  She hates the thought of worms and therefore worms her chickens every month (and sometime more) with flubenvet (think thats what its called!!!).  As it is recomended to worm chickens every six months or so, is she over doing it?  Can the worms become immune to the flubenvet if used to much and therefore not be as effective?  I try not to do it as often as her.  I also use cider vinigar and garlic in my water daily to try and keep the worms at bay more naturally.  What are your oppinions?

OMG  What have I been letting my chickens go through as I have never wormed them !!!!Unless it is in the mash/pellets I give them.  Please can someone advise me as to what is best to give them and how - by mouth,in their feed/water???
I have had them for 2 years and they are good layers but would hate to know I have not been giving them the necessary protection.
Any input / advise would be much appreciated.

My program is from March-Nov every three months then leave until March the following, this is based on worm activity being less in the colder months (allegedly).

most people worm them every 4-6 months but as mine wander all over the place and are in contact with wild birds I prefer to worm mine every 3 months.

take a look at this pdf which explains a lot about worms:-

Good linky Joyfull.
Bottom paragraph on page 5 suggests what I have read is correct in that the eggs/ worms can't really survive in cold temps, indeed so far this winter I cant remember it being over 10c even here in the tropics.
I shall read it propper when I have time.

Thanks

More often than 5 weeks with Flubenvet is too often otherwise see this thread it'll tell you all you need to know and there's several other threads which deal with this topic.
