Planting potatoes
« on: January 28, 2011, 13:16 »
I know potatoes are very frost sensitive but now that it is not -12 anymore and last years earlies have all sprouted in the cupboard, I was thinking to try planting them in the garden next weekend, I have one of those small poly tunnels that you get for about £10 and is about 10cm high, was thinking to keep them well covered with soil and that on top, do you think this would maybe work, or try this approach in late feb march if winter does not return with a blast.

Am thinking some volunteer potatoes come through as long as they have been well burried from the previous year so maybe worth a shot?

yes it could work depending on the weather, but why would you want to? A lot of chaps on our site use black plastic flower buckets and keep them in the greenhouse or something similar to get an earlier crop and that works well, but last years cold start to spring did hit them.
My biggest issue is using old stock, you have no idea what virus etc is there, the reason we buy new stock is they are pretty much guaranteed disease free.

I'd say it's too early, even covered, especially given your location.

Also I'd back up what Aidy said about running the risk of disease.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree, way too early.

I'd get them out of the cupboard too (if they are in the dark) and chit them in the daylight on a windowsill.

Mid March is the earliest I would think of planting out.

thanks guys, specially DD for reminding me of my location ;-)

I have a small office so have 4 buckets there and they have taken off once in some soil.
I had put a box in the shed that were green to try and get them to come good again and then took them inside to avoid the cold weather, when I looked at the bottom of the shelf after Christmas, the chitting was well underway

only wanted to plant them as they seem to be so far along in chitting and wanted to slow them down but they are under a window sill.

Thanks again,
LD
