Washing seed trays
« on: January 27, 2011, 08:18 »
Hello all, whats the best cleaning thing to wash grubby seed trays in please?  Am doing them all in the bath and shower  I have some viakon (sp?) is this ok? Or just soda crystals?

Do you mean Viakal - for removing limescale?

I use Jeyes fluid, it doesn't remove lime scale, but it sterilises, which is the most important thing. (Not that a lot could live through a soak in soda!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i tend to just wash them in washing up liquid and then rinse them with some sterilising liquid thats meant for babies bottles.

the only reason i do this though is because its there in the cupboard and it means i don't have to buy anything else.

For small/medium items I use two large buckets - one for washing and one for rinsing. For really large pots I would wash them under a hose.

I use washing liquid and then a rinse in well diluted Jaye's Fluid (love the smell of JF). If you use washing liquid make sure that you do rinse it off well.

Also use washing liquid to wash down the glass of the green house.

I think you mean Virkon.
It's a very very very strong disinfectant that the hospitals use.
Just be carefull with it and when you use it wear gloves, also make sure you rince everything thoroughly as it will kill anything it comes in contact with.

I use the sterilising soloution for sterilising babys bottles once i've washed them in normal washing up liquid,
It's strong but mild  ;)

I've got some 1/4 sized seed trays (for my windowsill propagator) which are very rigid, so I wonder if they will go in the dish washer?

Hi all, thank you.

Just been in the shed, its Virkon S I have, had it for dipping boots in when foot n mouth was about. I'm using up things rather than buy something else. Dont think Jeyes in the bathroom will be appreciated :D   Maybe i will just wsh trays in washing up liquid in the bath, then give them a swill and rinse outside with the virkon in  case it damages the bath.

That sounds like a good plan, you don't want to take the surface off the bath.
I just give mine a rinse in cold water and washing up liquid in my wheelbarrow. I keep old dish scrubbers for the task.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Now that's an idea, using the wheelbarrow!

I only ever use washing up liquid, can't be bothered to do anything more - and so far I've been lucky (touch wood!!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have a spare recycling bin from the council,, if you have a family you can apply for 2 bins,, anyway I use 1 at times to wash me pots and trays,,, fill it with water add jayes and then leave all my pots/trays to soak over night get them out,, i then use the liquid thats left over to wash my cold frames on the drive, giving the drive a good clean at the same time as it gets mossy, and then rinse the whole lot with a hose..

I do mine in hot water with a squibb of washing up liquid & a splash of household bleach. I use an old washing up brush & pot scrubber all in a large tub trug. Then I rinse with the hose pipe & leave to drain.Worked well for me for the last 25 years.

I scrub mine in warm soapy water then rinse, followed by 30 minutes soak in Jeyes Fluid/watersolution to sterilise. Can't beat JF and has been used for years for this very purpose. Also use it to clean down my greenhouse.
