I would second the 'smoker' & terrier option..... I have a fantastic little terrier that lives for working on the land and my OH regularly helps out with the local farmers..  It is an effective way of just keeping it under control - as previously said they'll never completely disappear.  But it really isnt pleasant if you get too many of them pesky varmits running around!!

hello thankyou for the offer, i do have a jack russel cross but the thing im worried about now is that they have been eatting the poison (the rats), and if she gets 1 of them she too could be poisoned as she like to draw blood...( she loves killing mice and she's good at it, she' now 11)

In preparation for keeping poultry, I read up on rat control.

This link is a very comprehensive run down on how to deal with rats - it's not as simple as I first thought and it does take some science and care to do it well.
