Mole Hills
« on: January 16, 2011, 15:08 »
I always just scoop up mole hills and chuck it on my plot , as i have them around the edges. Just noticed Henrys tip of putting the stuff in a biscuit tin and in the oven for 2 hrs to sterilise it! i asked my wife but no chance of using our oven lol.

My question is why is the soil so good after a mole has been through it? all i know is it lovely fine stuff.

does anybody else use there mole hills for stuff?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Jumping up and down on and shouting mole abuse as loudly as I can.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Only for re-filling the holes they've made. There is a long standing main run going underneath our garden, which crosses right under the veg patch and polytunnel. They can cause plenty damage to crops when they start branching off.

Friable is the word your looking for.  ideal for mixing with seed compost for a little extra body, and I think you would like it if there was a 'little extra body' in the mole hill at the time !   Cheers,   Tony.

Mole hill soil is just soil that has been churned up by moles.
Its friable texture makes it easy to mix with other ingredients if you are intent on making your own specialised compost, but it is better to get rid of the moles.

Moles do not like noise/vibration.  So a good solution is to keep a heavy animal that can roam the area - some say that a dog is good enough.

An alternative (assuming that the local mole-catcher is not favoured) is to have some cats.  Cats can rarely catch moles but with their acute hearing they can detect them and instinctively jump on the place where a mole is searching for worms.  I have watched this with fascination and have observed the rapid departure of a destructive mole population from my garden to the field across the stream.

This is my mole deterrent, but she isn't quite so good at catching them now she is getting on a bit!  Only caught 2 last year, but 15 4 years ago!

I have two giant breed dogs and they are no deterrent to moles  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.
