What do you think?
« on: January 16, 2011, 13:27 »
I was out in the garage today and noticed I have a few deep base cat litter trays which where used for my ferrets when I had loads of them. Anyway I'm thinking I could make use of these again as seed trays as they are more robust than the flimsy seed trays you buy at the garden centre what are others thoughts on this and if it's a good idea would you suggest I drill a few drainage holes or leave as is and just water enough not to drowned the seedlings?

I'm thinking recycling here.

Cheers Bill

Use anything you do not have to buy !  I use the (blue) trays mushrooms come in.  The clear plastic trays that hold meat.  Also the clear plastic containers of 'big crisps' are good as mini cloches.   Anything but buy ! ! !  Cheers,   Tony.

I use pound shop litter trays, some i've melted drainage holes in the bottom and others I've left as they are and use them to stand pots in, makes it easy to move them around.

What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

Bill's talking about something robust, though, these are not.

I've long advocated cat litter trays on this forum - from what ever source - as many will testify.

I use a hot skewer to make the drainage holes rather than a drill

I wouldn't drill/burn holes in the trays.  I'd plant in something smaller and set these in the tray, that way watering can be constant and regulated.   Cheers,   Tony.

Which will cramp the plants up more and defeat the original objective.

This method is tried, proven & tested & not just by me, if you read the links.

If it's good enough for Medwyn Williams...................
