Anyone tried Marfona spuds?
« on: January 15, 2011, 01:20 »
In all honesty I was never really aware of this variety until I bought a sack of them (for eating) produced by a local farm. They are fantastic spuds. Strangely they don't seem to be listed as good for mash, but they make the best mashed spuds I've ever tasted, really creamy, buttery taste. They also make excellent roasties. There's a wide range of sizes in the sack, but some of them are bigger spuds than I've ever seen before, could feed four people from a single spud.

Has anyone tried growing these? They're listed as second earlies so I was thinking of giving them a try. I'm obviously not going to be getting any monsters because I was going to grow them in containers, but is there any reason why they're not suitable for non-commercial growing?

no, no reason at all.
When i was involved in Potato variety testing Marfona were a very good all round variety to grow.
Good skin setting and fair scab resistance.
its nice to be important, but it more important to be nice......

If you look at the potato popularity polls on site, you will see that not many people grow them, perhaps seed is not stocked at the popular outlets

JBA in Annan have them and so does Dundry (see links below) if you live down that way. Must admit I haven't tried them before. I have already ordered my seed potatoes (duke of York and Cara) but will have a look at these next year.

They also have them at T&M, which might well mean they'll be stocked by my local Wyevale, so I'll go and check that out.

I grew them down on the lotty a couple of years back & they were riddled with slug holes & very small -all the other varieties did well so I haven't done them again.

Blimey! Some of the spuds in my sack are almost as big as a person's head, and I'm not exaggerating. They're the biggest I've ever seen.

It begs the question - what sort of fertilizer & pesticides has the grower used?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have grown them for three years on my organic plot and have had great yields.  Last year was the best - huge baking sized potatoes.  I bought some more for this year from T & M.

Well, the potato database describes them as large bakers, so I don't think it can be too unusual for them to be big. I think it might be the variety that supermarkets sell as bakers. I suspect the freakishly big ones would be graded out by supermarkets though, so you wouldn't see those on sale.

I have been growing Marfona for the last 5 years.  We love them.  I start digging up when they are an average size and they taste of lovely salad potatoes....the later ones i dig up are bigger but i use them for baking, boiling, roasting, mashing..they are very versitile.

I don't have a big problem with slugs as another person said they do either
