We've had our two Wyandottes for six months and ahve not laid an egg yet  .this morning one is busy underneath the coop picking up bits of straw and throwing them over her shoulders. as if nest making...not seen any do this before and wondered if this is a sign of a broody hen or a sign of about to lay a first egg?    Could she become broody before egg laying starts ?!!!!

Hens will do this before they lay an egg.  Here is a link to some info on how a chicken lays an egg

I think you should soon have an egg A lot of non broody hens will tidy up the nest area in the time it takes to lay an egg.

Oh never knew they did that prior to laying an egg ...probably as all our others have been laying  in  the nesting box ..

Oh getting quite excited now as we have been waiting for them to lay for sooo long, daft isn't it ?!!!
