Operation rabbit
« on: January 04, 2011, 23:46 »
Acquired a new plot which has been cleared however the site does have quite a few rabbits. I know that means I will have to fence the plot including partly under the soil, however on my plot I have two rabbits holes.

The fences will keep them out but what should I do regarding the two holes that are already within the plot?

Leave the gate open when you are on the plot, and chase the rabbits out when they appear

Have you got a dog? The Dog's smell will put them off - even if the dog doesn't despatch them!

We have rabbits inside our rabbit fence now and again (it encloses an areas much larger than a vegetable patch), we chase them out (or the dog gets them)

Ferrets and purse nets should do the trick.

Failing that ferret fewmets should act as a deterrent.

The two holes may be temporary and not connect to a warren. Dig down and follow the holes as far as you can and then fill them in.

If you are installing a new section of fence, dig down about a foot and then outwards about two feet to flummox the bunnies.   Cheers,  Tony.

Loving the responses.

Air rifle I could handle however tried rabbit and didn't like it.

Dogs, I have two labradors however whilst I am sure they would scare the rabbits they are quite energetic and could cause just as much damage as the rabbits.

Dis-used holes....could be, following them back, possible but as luck would have it they are slap bang in the middle, so no quick dig, especially as my soil is rather wet and soggy at the moment.

Purse nets....just about to google it and Tony I am all for flummoxing those pesky rabbits.

Thanks for the contributions.

I'm sure there's someone nearby who does.  ;)

I love rabbit. Many years ago I lived on a large farm and the gamekeeper used to bring me two pairs of rabbit once a week. Two of them went into a rabbit curry on Saturday night and the other two used to get boiled and the meat stripped off to feed the dogs and cats.

Can't even order them from the butchers round here now.

I get rabbit very rarely from my sons girlfriends uncle....wish he'd send more my way!
