Breeding from hybrid cockerel
« on: November 27, 2010, 19:13 »
I purchased two chickens a few weeks ago and just realised one is a cockerel, rather than getting rid i was wandering if hybrid cockerels are fertile and if he runs with a suitable hen could he potentially fertilise the eggs?

yes he will be fertile and can mate with any hen  :)

I have removed your second post that was asking exactly the same question  :).

Welcome to the forum by the way  :D

Hybrid cockerels dont make very good babies though. If you want to breed, get a good cockerel, something like a sussex, or rhode Island would make good babies with your hybrids, as the youngsters would then be good layers.  Also, consider if your hybrids might be related, ie brother and sister?

Hi there, if your chickens were sold to you as pullets/hens, then the person you bought them off should either give you a refund or exchange for the cockerel :)

thankyou for the replies. im reluctant to get rid of him now. i have grown quite attached to him. Its quite funny, the hens seem to boss him around rather than than the other way

they will until next spring when he comes into his own. Are your neighbours ok with him crowing all hours? If he is not related to your other hens and you want to keep him then why not? I have an araucana cross cockerel and he is beautifull (a lovely beetle black colour) so rather than dispatching him I am keeping him and will let him run with the girls here  :).

no, he is not related to my other birds. he has just started growing some nice long tail feathers, and he crowed for the first time yesterday. it was a pretty poor attempt though!! he is fairly quiet at the minute and i only have two neighbours, other than that iam surrounded by fields. I am thinking of getting a couple more hens, just deciding whether to get a couple more hybrids to match what i already have (Lohmann browns/Warrens) or a proper breed. I suppose the egg production is what i go for but i also like friendly birds that interact with you

the only problem with breeding with hybrids is that you can never be sure what will hatch but having a cockerel will help keep the girls in line and if you decide you want to hatch chicks you can always remove the eggs your girls have laid and replace with pure breed eggs. This will also avoid him breeding with his young in the future.
