How many potato seeds
« on: November 26, 2010, 21:21 »
I've never grown spuds before. How many seeds will I need approx to feed my family of 4 next year?

I bought 60 (20 early, 2nd early and main) from T&M using their £10 offer, cost me about £6 but I have a feeling this won't be enough. I have enough space as I've managed to get another half plot so I have a whole plot now.

Cheers.

There's no way of saying as it depends so much on the soil and the weather.

And on the variety. And the slugs. And the eelworm. And blight. And of course on how many you as a family eat.

So many variables - what I'd do is to find out the average yield for each tuber for your varieties and then how many you will potentially eat. And work it from there.

My best guess would be that those will provide potatoes until about October/November.

You probably have enough first and second earlies. If you buy any more they should be main crop to take you through the Winter. Choose varieties that are suitable for what you eat, chips, baked, mash etc. Have in mind that main crop usually yield more than earlies or seconds by quite a lot.

You may decide that main crops are cheap and good quality in the shops during the Winter.

It all depends on the type and variety. For the very first, first earlies I get about one pound of spuds per seed, for second earlies this varies between two and three pounds per seed and for maincrop will be more.  I only grow earlies and this year ( not a good one) I got just short of 200 lbs of spuds from 90 seed potatoes of four varieties. They lasted the three of us from late May to late October. Others may have different experiences as there are so many variables involved.
