Gooseberry Plants

I planted 2 new plants earlier this year, and whilst they have grown in size I have had no fruit this year.

Am I meant to cut these back for the winter or do I just leave them please?

Think that gooseberry's grow fruit on old wood, as in one year old and older. So you need to allow it to form a structure of branches on which to grow the fruit.

As they are new I would guess that all the wood is new and not yet one year old, so no fruit yet.

If you cut them back then all the stuff that would bear fruit next year gets cut off, so no fruit next year either.

Allow them to grow to a suitable shape, maintaining a mature branch structure.

Mind the spiky horrors when picking the fruit.
