Onions.....too late?

hi all
is it to late to plant onion sets ?
i bought them the begining o the month, but my father passed away suddenly so havent fancied going to the allotment since. ive just come across the sets and some of them have started to sprout, should i put them in or buy new in the spring. thanks lisa xx

Put my onions and garlic in first week of Nov last year and they were fine - even with all the frosts etc. Mine arent in this year yet.

hi, sorry to hear about your father. Hope you're keeping well. White onions can grow now, red barons i think grow after new year. I'd be careful about sprouted onions and garlic. we grew the spouted ones and they didn't grow as well as those that weren't sprouted but give it a try and see how it fairs.

Onion sets will normally put down roots first which then feed the plant as it sends up the shoot. If the bulb has already shooted it is using food and water reserves from the bulb alone to grow which wil run out fairly quickly. If you plant them soon enogh after shooting they will put down roots which will then feed the plant but the plant will lag behind those that had roots before shoots.
