Dead Chicken
« on: October 23, 2010, 08:43 »
Morning everyone, yesterday one of my Araucana cross girls was a bit off colour, not puffed up just a bit quiet, eating and drinking but kept coming up to me and standing by my feet, had a good look at her but could se nothing obvious. I got her in and put her in a big box with food and water, gave her a bit of cat food and left her to rest while i went to work. When i came back four hours later she was dead, but she was all twisted up, her neck was bent right back poor little thing. Any one know what might have been wrong?

She was probably all twisted as when they die they have a massive nerve serge which causes them to move dramatically and flap their wings - have seen this myself in one of ours.
How old was she? did she feel thin?

Hi, yes she did feel thin, she has been eating and drinking ok, i feel bad as maybe if i had noticed earlier i could have taken her to the vets. they were all wormed a couple of weeks ago. Had a good look and feel of all my girls today and they are all fatter than she was, i hope the others will be ok. Just have no idea what was wrong with her.

Don't feel bad, Bantymad.  Chooks are very good at hiding when they aren't feeling well  :(

I agree with bantamnovice - perhaps it was just her time, if she was thin she had prob been off her food for a while but its hard to notice them not eating if you have a few birds!
