No - they are quite a fruit of their own! We used to leave ours on the tree to ripen - after the frost has had a go the sugars change and ripen the fruit The texture ripe is kind of like cooked sweet potato and grape ( very odd)  and the pulp is a brownish colour when ripe. The flavour was kind of astringent (like the sharon fruit as you said) but also spicy and sweet. It has a lot of complexity. They have pips in them like an apple. It's an interesting tree. Have  a read up on its history.
