? broken leg
« on: October 05, 2010, 17:29 »
Hi

One of my babies has suddenly got a bad leg. Noticed it was a bit withdrawn last night, although eating etc ok. Today she seems to drag it behind her. Should we just let nature deal with it or is there something active we can do ?

Just been sitting out there in house with them. She is warm, and is eating and fighting to keep up with her three siblings. They are about 7 weeks old now, and this has just happened. There is no obvious break and she does not retract it or anything when feeling the leg. Its almost as though they are stiff or something, but the left one definitely gets left behind her at times.

If there is a chance that it could be broken then its a bit unfair to just leave it :(

If it can weight bear then probably not broken, but could have got hung up on wire or jumped off a higher than normal place....

If it were me I would restrict movement for a few days.... give some metacam and then if not better either cull for humane reasons or take to a vet for a proper opinion.  :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

It could be dislocated (one of mine had a dislocated leg and dragged it like yours is doing), I would take her to a vets to get it checked and poped back if necessary along with some metacam or loxicom to ease the pain and reduce the inflamation.
Staffies are softer than you think.

After consulting the vet he has said its splay leg. He also said it will not affect her quality of life in anyway, but there is no treatment. The funniest thing was that we hadnt named her yet, but as part of the vetinary procedure was to name it. So "chicken little" it was.
