Laying in the coop
« on: October 04, 2010, 15:08 »
Just a wee question, i have noticed recently, well i should say my husband as its him who lets them out everymorning , hes found the odd egg under the perch, only really started now the nights are drawing in,  there not softies, lovely hard shelled eggs, anyone any ideas why there choosing to lay odd hrs, has it something to do with the change of season, less light during the day.   Many thanks,  nickyx

One of mine lays in the coop whilst the other two in nest boxes. If you are opening them up first thing and collecting the eggs, I don't see it as an issue personally.

One of mine does it everyday under the perch, as long as it isn't caked in you know what there isn't a problem with it!

When I went to collect some new chooks a few months ago, I left my car door open when I went to collect...

Yep!! You've guessed!! Just getting the kids and our new girls into the car and there was a loud rosey... One of the hens had jumped in and laid!! Couldn't believe my luck!!  :D

Some times they prefur a certain nest box and if that is occupied they cannot wait and lay anywhere sometimes they just do it! I find the odd one outside too. I had one hen that was walking around the pen all hunched up and I thought she may have retained an egg so bent down to feel her back end and she popped out the egg in my hand! Silly creatures but quite normal.
