Wild birds laying in Coop nestbox?
« on: March 07, 2013, 15:27 »
My wife discovered this small greeny, brown egg in the nest box with some more normal sized chicken eggs. Don't think our pekin has had a funny turn. It looks a bit like some cuckoo eggs I've seen on t'web.

Any suggestions?

This article seems to suggest that a cuckoo may be able to mimic the hen's eggs better than that..

It sounds like one of your hens has laid a blow egg. I Found one in the coop on wednesday when I got 3 eggs. I know they were from my 2 speckledy's. The small eggs happen now and again and you can still mostly eat them

Ways too early for cuckoos in England.  Sensible birds are still in Africa eating insects and enjoying the sun.

That's a good point too madcat. I've seen/heard them round these parts - actually 50 miles to the north of here - in April, but that is still some weeks away.

Just got round to taking a photo of the small egg I found on wednesday. It was laid by one of my speckledy's. Hope it helps  :)

Thanks for the replies, cuckoo was always an outside shot, though I'm told by birding friends that one was spotted/heard locally earlier this week, which is what made me think of it as a possibility to start with.

Probably a duff egg then, not had any more.

Cheers
