Strawberry question
« on: September 27, 2010, 14:53 »
I have never grown strawberries before and ordered 30 irrisistible from T&M a month or so ago, they arrived Sat. All looked a bit sorry for themselves with bare roots and some with just two leaves. I planted them spaced as suggested, trying to avoid too deep or shallow and watered well. They currently look very sorry for themselves, flopped over, is this normal? How long before they look like they should?

They're not going to do an awful lot at this time of year. Come the spring they should streak away.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They like to be planted with their crowns slightly higher than the soil surface. They won't do too much now but should recover and settle in whilst the soil is still warm. I would give them a sprinkling of bonemeal to help them establish. Not bought strawberries from a firm for a long time but I would expect them to be a bit more happy than yours were. I don't buy anything from T+M now as had problems with quality in the past - unlucky?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Got my Irresistible from T & M, didn't look much when they arrived, but they're corkers now & spreading everywhere!

Thanks for the replies guys - I came back from work today and could swear one or two are already looking a little bit better. Looking forward to lots of strabs in the summer!

I've potted up 75 runners and they've all taken.

Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

18" apart....
I got 30 irrisisible from T&M and put them in 2 weeks ago.....they looked pretty sad at first but are now sprouting fresh growth and look like they have been in for ages!...I suspect the mild damp weather coupled with plenty of sun has helped a lot but even so I'm amazed at how well they are doing.

most of mine now look pretty good but a few look to have almost died off apart from a tiny bit of new growth. Overall I would say 25 of the 30 look healthy.
