... if garlic is planted in an un-heated greenhouse in 3-4" pots, as opposed to planting direct into the final growing position.
The reason I ask is this is the first time I have tried growing garlic and I would like to experiment to see which way is more productive.
I presume (maybe wrongly) that if my bulbs get a good head start before winter arrives, they will make for a better stronger plant...
I set some away about 2 weeks ago in the greenhouse and they are between 5-8" tall at the moment, and I was thinking about planting out early October, the outdoor ones will be put in a bed mid to late October
... any suggestions anyone?

From what i've tried garlic planted outside now will well shoot now with a good start for the spring and saves on the labour of starting in pots first. Must say though experimenting can be fun.

the garlic I planted outside last October/November didn't put any growth on at all over winter which was very worrying at first but then in early spring the shoots started to come up and then really took off - I harvested some great bulbs in July
