How long is too long?
« on: September 15, 2010, 14:07 »
Hi again
I have my chickens 5 weeks now.
3 still are not laying although I'm not sure what age they are, only that breeder said all were this years birds. 1 is a Barnevelder but I think is going through a mini moult (lost tail feathers etc) and 2 are welsummers.
However 1 welsummer did lay one egg on her third day with us although she did make an awful fuss over it but none since. The other welsummer is very timid and follows the other one everywhere. Should I just continue to be patient. They have been wormed, frontlined etc.

We got 5 hens at the end of June and 1 is still not laying the other 4 took between 2 to several week to get there act together.

 About 3 weeks ago we got another 3, the 2 bantams were laying when they arrived the 3 had gone off laying.

Now we have 8 hens and get 4 eggs, at the most a day.  So, 2 were never laying and 2 that were have decided to stop, it's very frustrating and I'd love to know why ;)
May this day be blessed with gifts, understanding and friends.  Merlin 2001-2012 Pandora 2001-2013 xxx

I know how you feel evie2, ::)
I think we have got 3 eggs today for the second time only out of 6 chickens! :)
The 3 lay regularly but one has problems with thin shells and hers often break. Although I have started using shell max booster from Saturday and have got 2 good eggs out of 3 so maybe I have cracked this problem (pardon the pun). :lol:
I search the garden and everything in case they are laying elsewhere but they never seem to disappear so I don't think they are laying away.
I just thought it was really strange to get one egg and then nothing more! :(

Perhaps she was ready to lay and as the egg was ready had to lay it - but the move may have unsettled her. Sometimes this years hens do not lay until after Christmas.

it just means that they will lay for longer when they do start! :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
