Harvest Leeks & Keep Soil?
« on: September 14, 2010, 14:58 »
Two very basic questions from a novice to growing vegetables:

1 planted, in big pots, leek seeds in April, now over a foot high and about 3/4 inch thick, should I leave longer?

2 after pulling plants from my pots is the soil spent or can it be saved for next season?

Thanks for any advicethe soil in my pots

It depends how you like your leeks - baby leeks are really nice but if left they will continue to grow and people say that a bit of frost can even improve the flavour. Last year I continued to eat leeks until March.

As for the soil - you could just tip it onto another area in your garden and replace it for next year. Or if you only have pots then you will need to put some goodness back before using them to grow again - some fertiliser, growmore, chicken poo, or manure will help. Best not to keep growing the same plant in the same pot as the leeks will have used up "what leeks need" so they would not grow as well in the same soil next year.

Hi

I hvae put Lekks in a raised bed this year and was also concerned as to when I should start digging them up. Thanks for the tip about frost.
