fruit trees on allotments
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:55 »
all allotments should have at least 1 fruit tree if the plot size allows.
no trees = no oxygen = no life on earth .

And mine.

What if I actually don't want one?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What would you recommend for a newbie such as myself who has virtually no fruit tree growing experience!  I have a plum tree in my garden - but it was only planted this spring, so yet to produce fruit.  My allotment is 17m x 5m, so is big enough to accommodate a tree...

I planted 5 apples, two pears and a plum.

The plum died.

I also have two apples and two plums I planted in pots, one plum will be used as a replacement.

Must dig a pond to create and algal bloom. How do you cook it?

plant them in containers in the ground there is nothing they can do as you can just upt and move them and by the way there are no rules in your tenancy to tell you that unless the tenancies have changed

Have you read my tenancy agreement?

It say NO trees.

They are not all written the same, you know.

this is presumably the chap that has previously told me no raised beds ,a small row of flowers and a 6 x 4 ft shed only with permission  soon  you will not allow any manure on your plot as you are only allowed to use green waste from your land only .

No one said that the Spalding tenancy agreement forbid it.

The original poster was telling everyone to plant trees and some of us have pointed out that we can't.

My job is about promoting tree planting, and we carried out a tree canopy survey not long ago, one finding of which was that several of the allotment sites have 30%+ cover and still function well (mostly around the perimeter but not all). That's not to say issues of shading, leaf-fall etc shouldn't be addressed, but that it's possible to have quite high levels of cover on productive sites.

Having said that, our new plot is right in the middle of our site and gets LOADS more sun than the old one!

M
ps we have planted or inherited 4 small trees, which Manchester tenancies allow...

I think my agreement says no fruit trees which is ironic as the council site has huge trees around it which drop their little helicopter seeds onto our plots. My overgrown allotment had 7 self sown trees over 6 foot when I took it over. None of them are fruit trees. Others on the site do grow small fruit trees on the principle that it is often "easier to get forgiveness than permission."
