Winter Hyacinths anyone?
« on: September 04, 2010, 15:14 »
Just set up four Hyacinth bulbs for that special day in December!
I'm trying the glass carafe type vases for the first time so hope that they prosper. Info on the net says to keep them in the dark until about two inches of growth is showing.
What could be simpler than that for a Christmas gift?

I've lost count of the number of years I've been doing this,  but I plant them in compost.

I plan to pick some bulbs up very soon when I go for my winter onions.

I wish the recipients would give the pots back, though!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We keep ours in the cold and dark out in the garage until it is nearl time to give them to recipients, and then top the compost off with some fresh moss from the lawn

Sometimes we forget they are there and have lots for ourselves in the New Year

I love them but OH bans them from the house as he hates the smell says they smell like cats p** which amazes me as he could not smell the lilies in the garden this year and they were really scented.

I have the same problem  :D  genetic I think, like rolling your tongue, some can smell a pretty scent others can smell nothing or a cats wee smell!  :tongue2: unless a flower is very strongly scented it is lost on me, roses smell lovely though  :D
